Srila Prabhupada Quote Of The Day

31 December, 1972

Bombay

My dear Dhananjaya,

Of course, the devotee is always very liberal-minded and tolerant towards everyone, seeing everyone as the part and parcel of Krsna and the pure devotee of Krsna, only seeing that due to maya they have temporarily forgotten their real position. So a devotee is always very understanding if there is some discrepancy behavior on the part of nondevotees, and even some devotees misbehave, he is always very tolerant and understanding.

The point is that no one is actually qualified in this material world to approach Krsna, but if he makes the attempt through our inducing him gradually to give his energy to Krsna, by that attempt Krsna will extend his mercy and deliver the fallen soul despite his so many disqualifications. And such person or aspiring devotee, he is to be considered the most exalted of men because he has given his life to Krsna.

HariKatha: The Advisory Board Meetings - Navadvipa - March 22-24, 2008

“Tell Your Ideas Openly and Bravely”

Sri Kesavaji Gaudiya Matha
Navadvipa (Koladvipa), India
March 22-24, 2008

Respected Harikatha Readers,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga.

After the successful completion of the Navadvipa-dhama parikrama and Gaura-purnima celebration, an Advisory Board Meeting was held at Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja’s request. By the will of the Lord, of the one-hundred devotees present, only half of them were members of the Advisory Board. Still, all the devotees present were valuable contributors. And actually, the meeting was more of a communications skills workshop than a management directors’ meeting.

The meeting was held in front of the small, former temple room at Sri Kesavaji Gaudiya Matha. The purpose of this meeting was to further unite the members of his international society, in order to make it a more powerful spiritual force for spreading Krsna consciousness around the world.

The meeting was led by Dilip Sahajpal (Global CEO, Board level Leadership, and management consultant). A long-time friend of Sriman Yasodanandana dasa and co-director of Srila Narayana Maharaja’s business in the UK, Dilip had also conducted the Advisory Board meeting which took place in Vrndavana just before Kartika last year. There, he had been instrumental in inspiring an increase of open, heartfelt communication among the members present.

The meeting in Navadvipa took place over a three-day period, and on the second day Srila Narayan Maharaja personally attended for a short while. Srila Maharaja first asked Yasodanandana dasa (co-facilitator of the meeting, and member of Srila Narayan Maharaja’s Bhakti Trust International) how the meetings were progressing. The following is a transcription of his discussion with Yasodanandana dasa and the other devotees present.

March 23rd

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja (*See Endnote):] “What have you discussed so far?”

[Yasodanandana dasa:] “At some points, Gurudeva, it was difficult, but now I think we have reached some very good conclusions.”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “Are all sannyasis here? Indian and Western?”

[Brajanath dasa:] “Not all.”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “Not all, but mostly?”

[Brajanath dasa:] “Mostly the Western sannyasis are here.”

[Yasodanandana dasa:] “Would you like me to summarize what took place so far?”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “It will be best that you finish the meeting, and then I will return here. At that time you can tell me everything in brief. Now I am going to see Thakurji, and you should continue.

“(To all devotees) You are satisfied?”

[Srila Maharaja called for Ramacandra, who began to explain the beginning of the discussions regarding the formation of a sannyasi council.]

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “Five or six or seven sannyasis and other preachers go to a place at the same time, and this creates a burden for the local devotees of that place. So first they should discuss among themselves, and then decide who will go where and when they will go.

“So you should continue your meeting, and finish tomorrow. I am leaving at about three or four o’clock in the afternoon, so I may come in the morning at about ten. Try to finish by then. You should begin earlier, from eight o’clock.

“(Turning to all devotees) I think you should all tell your ideas openly and bravely; don’t fear from anyone. You all have a right to express your ideas. Do not think, “Oh, only they are controlling.”

[Sripad Vana Maharaja:] “There is a question about taking Syamarani didi in the sannyasa council. Some are saying yes, others are saying no.”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “Do not worry about that. She is ‘sannyasini’.”

[Sripad Ramachandra dasa:] “Gurudeva, the concern is that (in the sannyasa council), the sannyasis are going to monitor the sannyasis’ behaviour (character). So, if there is a lady in the council it will be difficult. It’s better that only men are in the council.”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “But you can take her views; suggestions.

“OK, so you should continue.

”Gopinatha prabhu, is everything going on well?”

[Gopinatha dasa:] “Very well, Gurudeva.”

[Ramacandra dasa:] “We heard at the beginning of the meeting this morning, before you arrived, that you said the voting should be ‘anonymous’. What do you mean by that? Perhaps you really meant ‘unanimous’?”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “It means ‘by majority’. Your votes should be by majority, and two/thirds vote is better. In this way you should decide everything.

“Sannyasis and preachers should not give pressure to anyone. They should not say to others, “I am coming to your area, so you should give me my ‘coming and going’ fare.” They should not press. Do you understand? Others may give, but of their own accord. Also, you should know that Van Maharaja and Sajjana Maharaja are giving me everything they receive as pranami (donations), lakhs of rupees, from their preaching. I want that all the sannyasis help me with my projects. Try to do this.”

March 24th

[Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja:] “What have you decided?”

[Yasodanandana dasa:] “The summary is as follows, Gurudeva: You requested that you want cooperation, preaching, no quarreling, taking responsibility, respecting each other, and relating with love and affection to all; and you want results. The framework that we used was ‘love and affection as a foundation-stone through relationships. We discussed taking 100% responsibility, both individually and working in teams interdependently. We also discussed that there would be some working principles so that we understand how to manage.’

“We decided to evolve together with ‘love and affection, through responsibility and effective action.’ We realize that we need to build much more trust. There is not enough trust between us. We will do this through practical cooperation.

“We discussed tangible things, Gurudeva, like when we form seva groups we should do so in a disciplined manner. For example, there would be three to five devotees in a team, not nine or ten or fifteen. In order to decide who is on a team if there are too many volunteers, there would be a vote. Also, we discussed publishing the existence of the seva teams on the internet. In this way, everybody would know of the teams’ existence, their members, and their purpose.

“We also talked about the clear process of making decisions. We have no desire to quarrel, so there needs to be a clear process of making decisions. Groups would first of all define the question they want to decide on, and then set a timeline for making that decision. A unanimous decision is best, or, if not, then a two-thirds vote; and if not, then a majority vote.

“Then we came to an important principle. If a devotee is on a seva-team and the majority vote goes against his opinion, that devotee will still work with the group, as though the vote was for his opinion. There would be no selfishness in the group. We work for the team.

“We already had a practical example of this. We applied this principle, in action, with the newly formed sannyasi council seva group. I’m going to hand the mike to Sripad Vaikhanas Maharaja. He will explain what they did.”

[Sripad Vaikhanas Maharaja:] “The purpose of the sannyasi group is to create a greater sense of cooperation and relationship between all the sannyasis, both Western and Indian. Another purpose is to responsibly assist in the preaching world-wide, and to coordinate the preaching much more effectively.

“The sannyasi group itself, which is meant to communicate and coordinate the activities of all the sannyasis, consists of Sripad Madhava Maharaja, Sripad Tirtha Maharaja, Sripad Van Maharaja, Sripad Padmanabha Maharaja, and myself.

“From the larger sannyasi group, Sripad Padmanabha Maharaja, Sripad Bhagavat Maharaja, and Sripad Tridandi Maharaja will be three of the members of a new preachers’ board, which will also include those who are not sannyasis. This board will work cooperatively with preachers from the entire sanga, to organize, coordinate, and promote preaching throughout the world.

“For that purpose, a seva group (called SRI – Seva Resources Initiative) has been founded for facilitation, education, communication, and inspiration. They have a website, which will be launched soon, and the first report of this seva team will be given in Badger.”

[Yasodanandana dasa:] “Finally, there will be a website to give the tools for management. This will help the seva teams with their organizing. We will keep this website updated.”

Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja then inquired whether the name of his new Society has been decided yet. There was much discussion, at the end of which Yasodanandana dasa promised that the name will be decided and presented to him for approval by April. 30.

[Yasodanandana dasa and Brajanath dasa:] “Gurudeva, whatever proposal or decision we make, whether it is by unanimous vote, or two-thirds, or by majority, we will not do anything without your approval.”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “There needs to be some corrections in the temple room (natya-mandira) construction. Also, domes will be constructed, the guest rooms will extend further, and my bhajana kutir will be made. In this way, I think we can complete the temple this year – by the next Navadvipa parikrama. I want that.”

[Sripad Bhagavat Maharaja:] “How much is needed to complete the project?”

[Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja:] “Gopinath will give the conclusion.”

[Gopinatha dasa:] “To complete the whole project we actually need two million dollars.”

[Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja (to Dilip):] “You will have to help us. Each year, if there is any need, you should come and help. But I should also help you. I want your eternal well-being. I want that you will be happy in this world and in the transcendental world.”

Srila Maharaja then lovingly requested Dilip to prepare for accepting harinama and diksa. After this he left the meeting, accompanied by kirtana and feelings of imminent separation, now that he would be departing for Silagori.

After his departure, some of the devotees continued with the final part of the Advisory Board meeting. At that smaller meeting, Dilip and Yasodanandana dasa met with the devotees from many countries around the world who are involved in publishing Srila Maharaja’s books in different languages. During that meeting, a publication board was selected to assist all the international publishing teams in developing increased unity and a higher standard of excellence. The devotees on that publication board are Sripad Sagara Maharaja, Sundara-gopal dasa, Anita dasi, and Savitri dasi.

Many wonderful things happened at the three-day meeting. For example, the facilitators encouraged all the devotees present to speak their heartfelt feelings. Moreover, they encouraged all to hear when devotees would speak their feelings. Newer and younger and lady devotees were called upon to speak. These devotees were able to give their sincere advice to the sannyasis and other senior devotees. All the devotees present appreciated that openness. Especially, the sannyasis who were advised by these younger devotees appreciated their comments, and took them to heart.

It is not the purpose of this report to review all the points of the meeting, because this is a Harikatha report. We are therefore presenting only the parts of the meeting where Srila Narayan Maharaja was present and participated. The purpose of the report is so that all our readers will feel included. It is to encourage our respected readers that:

1. Srila Narayan Maharaja, desiring a strong, unified, harmonious society, is giving his full support to this meeting.
2. The devotees assisting with the organization work are working under Srila Maharaja's guidance and authorization.
3. Srila Maharaja wants to give all his sons and daughters equal opportunity for full participation and voice.

[*Endnote by Sripad Madhava Maharaja, explaining the reason we are now addressing Srila Narayan Maharaja and ‘Srila Narayan Gosvami Maharaja in our various publications: “According to the first verse of Sri Updesamrta, and according to the continuous activities shown by our Six Gosvamis - writing books on pure bhakti, establishing Sri Vigraha (the Deity form of the Lord), discovering and establishing the holy places of Sri Krsna's pastimes, and establishing ideal Vaisnava etiquette – the acaryas in our guru-parampara line (coming from Srila Rupa Gosvami) are ornamented with the title ‘Gosvami’. Nowadays this title is used in an ordinary or worldly sense by the family-line descendents of the Six Gosvamis. But actually, this title belongs to those who represent the authentic line of the teachings of our Six Gosvamis in the transcendental realm.”

Quotes on “Gosvami” from Srila Prabhupada Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja:
(From a letter to Satsvarupa, Montreal, 3 July 1968) “Really, Gosvami means one who is master of the influence of different senses, namely the influence of tongue, the influence of mind, the influence of anger, the influence of belly, the influence of genital, and the influence of talking. So one who is master of these influential webs of sense gratification, he is called Gosvami. Gosvami is not by hereditary chart.”

(From the book, Path of Perfection) “Unless one masters the senses, his acceptance of the title Svami or Gosvami is just a form of cheating. It was Rupa Gosvami who thus defined the meaning of the word Gosvami….One becomes so qualified under the directions of a bona fide spiritual master. Only when one has attained perfection in sense control can he be called a Gosvami and become a spiritual master in his turn. Unless one can master the senses, he will simply be a bogus spiritual master.”

(From Sri Upadesamrta (1) "A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the mind's demands, the actions of anger, and the urges of the tongue, belly, and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world."

(Excerpts from Sri Sad Goswami Astaka, by Srinivasa Acarya) “They are not envious of anyone. Thus they are engaged in missionary activities meant to deliver all the conditioned souls in the material universe….They are very expert in scrutinizingly studying all the revealed scriptures with the aim of establishing eternal religious principles for the benefit of all human beings….They are very much enriched in understanding of Lord Caitanya and who are thus expert in narrating His transcendental qualities….They kicked off all association of aristocracy as insignificant. In order to deliver the poor conditioned souls, they accepted loincloths, treating themselves as mendicants….They were always meek and humble enchanted by remembering the transcendental qualities of the Lord.”]

Thought of the Week

The holy name, character, pastimes and activities of Krishna are all transcendentally sweet like sugar candy. Although the tongue of one afflicted by the jaundice of avidya [ignorance] cannot taste anything sweet, it is wonderful that simply by carefully chanting these sweet names every day, a natural relish awakens within his tongue, and his disease is gradually destroyed at the root.

The sex attraction is very great in the material world. But in the spiritual world it is different.

My Dear Brahmananda,

Please accept my blessings. Your handwritten letter of 12.18.67 is a great pleasure. Your handwritten letter is more valuable than type written. Regarding Damodara's plight, we are very sorry but we must always expect that some of the weak soldiers may fall down in a fight waged against the great Maya external energy of Krishna.

The sex attraction is very great in the material world. But in the spiritual world it is different. From Srimad-Bhagavatam we know that the opposite sex namely the female members of Vaikuntha are many many times more beautiful than they are in the heavenly planets. Their hips and attractive smiles cannot stimulate sex urge passion of the man or male devotees. In the Vaikuntha planets the opulence is very great and yet they are all engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.

It is very difficult to conquer over the influence of Maya, but who firmly fixed up in Krishna Conciousness cannot be a victim of Maya. Anyway, we cannot stop our fighting with Maya, neither we can expect that all our soldiers will remain unhurt. You know Arjuna's son Abhimanyu was killed in the battle in which Bhismadeva was a party. Fight Krishna's cause sincerely and you will be gloried with victory

Windows XP SP3

Windows XP Service Pack 3 officially hit Microsoft servers this morning, and although it won't be available through Windows Update today, it should be sometime soon. Your desire to stay on the cutting edge of XP features and security may dictate that you install the latest service pack, but in case you were wondering what you can actually expect from your SP3 update, we're breaking down the new and improved features with our field guide to Windows XP SP3.

What Should I Expect?

You may be disappointed to find out that SP3 isn't really bringing much to the table in terms of new and sexy functionality. In fact, the majority of updates included in SP3 have been available as per-item hotfixes and updates for XP. However, there are also four new features being back-ported from Vista to XP. First, let's take a look at the back-ported features.

New Features in XP SP3

For the most part, Microsoft is doing their best to avoid pulling Vista features into XP, with just a few exceptions. They are:

  • Network Access Protection (NAP): A new system in Vista and Windows Server 2008, this feature sets system "health" requirements to validate a computer's health before it allows that computer to connect to yours.

  • "Black Hole" Router Detection: This new feature detects when your router is silently losing or discarding packets and is intended to protect from such problems.

  • Product Activation Not Required on Installation: Like Vista, you can now install XP without first providing a valid product key. Windows will prompt for a product key after installation, though, if you want to take advantage of Windows Genuine Advantage.

  • Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module: In a nutshell, this Vista back-port makes it easier to encrypt data through a single algorithm. Enjoy that one!

Aside from these Vista back-port features, other new features include more descriptive security options that better explain your security settings and improved administrator security.

Previously Released Features

As I said above, the majority of updates in SP3 were already available in one form or another via hotfixes or installations, but unless you're a system administrator, there's a good chance that they will still be new to your computer. Some are rather developer-oriented, so I'll highlight the updates that might mean something to the general user.

  • Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2): Provides support for WPA2, the latest wireless security protocol.

  • Peer Name Resolution: It's not sexy, but this minor update allows SP3 computers to communicate with Vista programs that use the Peer Name Resolutions Protocol (PNRP).

  • MMC 3.0: This is a framework to help simplify system management tasks in XP.

For a fuller rundown of every new feature, you can grab the XP SP3 overview from Microsoft as a PDF. Like I said, SP3 isn't the sexiest update your computer has ever seen, but if you're planning to continue using XP, then it's an update you're likely to be using for a while.

Panasonic Develops New Fuel Cell Cogeneration System for Home Use

World's Highest Power-generation Capability, Durability and Environmental Benefits

Tokyo, Japan, Apr 15, 2008 - (JCN Newswire) - Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is known, today announced it has developed a home-use polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) cogeneration system. The cogeneration system features the world's highest power-generating efficiency of up to 39% Lower Heating Value(LHV), durability of 40,000 operation hours and 4,000 start-stop times, and a predicted lifetime of over 10 years.

Panasonic has strived to achieve its vision of "living in harmony with the environment." With this goal as a motivator, the company has now developed a home-use fuel cell cogeneration system that is planned for early commercialization as a next-generation energy supply system.

Based on the results of large-scale field testing conducted between fiscal 2006 and fiscal 2008**, a new system has been developed with upgraded energy-saving features and enhanced reliability. Further field testing is scheduled in fiscal 2009 ending March 31, 2009.

When installed in an ordinary household, the new system can reduce primary energy consumption by 22% (about 1.4 times more than the conventional system) and can cut CO2 emissions by 12% based on the basic unit for all power sources. With year-round operation, it can save 3,262 kWh of primary energy and reduce CO2 emissions by 330 kg. The new system
can reduce CO2 emissions by 37% based on the basic unit for thermal power source. With year-round operation, it can cut CO2 emissions by1,175 kg.

The three-year field tests also found that the system was often operated in a power output range between 500 W and 1 kW in ordinary households. Within this practical use range, the new system has achieved drastically improved power-generating efficiency compared to conventional systems. The Panasonic system has achieved the world's highest power-generating efficiencies 39% (LHV) at 750 W; 38% or higher in the 500 W - 1 kW range and 34% at 300 W. The system has also satisfied durability requirements for home-use equipment.

In the conventional system, the fuel processing device is not as efficient and inverter efficiency drops toward its lower output ranges. As a result, the power-generating efficiency of the conventional system is the highest at its higher ratings, and falls with decreasing output.

Panasonic has made the system feasible by using cell stack technology that employs highly-durable Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA), fuel processing technology that allows stable operation in a wide range at high efficiency and low-loss boost inverter technology.

Panasonic will install production equipment for the new system in its plant in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and will start manufacturing from June this year. In fiscal 2010, further investments will be made to start a full-scale commercialization of this system as a new environmental business that creates a new energy source.

** Fiscal 2008 began April 1, 2007 and ended March 31, 2008. Rule applied to all other indicated fiscal years in
this release.

Sanskrit Word of the Week: Aprakata-lila

Aprakata-lila

Krishna’s “unmanifest pastimes,” which go on eternally in His abodes, all simultaneously, but are invisible except to rare, fortunate souls. In contrast, His prakata, or “manifest,” pastimes are visible to the public but only at specific times in a linear sequence of events.

Samsung to come up with water-powered mobile batteries

Samsung announced that it will come up with new mobile phone battery that would be powered by water.

The company expects the battery to be incorporated by 2010 which will convert water to Hydrogen gas and Oxygen when the mobile is switched on by reacting with metal inside the fuel cell.

Samsung claims that users will get about 10 hours of battery charge using their water-cell battery, almost double the life of today’s batteries. However the only downside is that if you use your phone for about 4 days on average, you will need to change the hydrogen cartridge every five days - which could make this an expensive affair.

But the company is confident that within certain years the hydrogen cartridges need not be changed and would only require to be filled with water.

Photo Tour Report - Hong Kong - April 8-13

Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja arrived in Hong Kong on April 7th and stayed until April 16th, after which he flew to Vancouver, Canada. The six-day Hong Kong Harikatha festival began on April 8th on Lantau Island, in a village called Pui’O, which is a one-hour ferry-ride from the city.

A house was rented for Srila Maharaja and his traveling party. The rest of the one-hundred-fifty devotees, from mainland China and other countries like Philippines and Malaysia, stayed in guest houses and camped on the beach. The festival site was at a devotee’s property in Pui’O, where the festival organizers put up a large tent and transformed it into a beautiful temple.

On the first evening, Srila Narayana Maharaja introduced the audience to the opening chapter of Srimad-Bhagavatam, wherein eighty-eight thousand sages headed by Saunaka Rsi inquired from Srila Suta Gosvami about how one’s soul can be happy. Srila Maharaja then discussed the importance of pure bhakti, unalloyed devotion to Sri Krsna performed exclusively to please Him.

He spoke in English, and every few minutes his words were translated into Chinese by his disciple Jamuna devi dasi. He told the devotees and guests, “Srila Suta Gosvami says that if anyone wants to be happy, he should follow the principles of bhakti-yoga. Only bhakti-yoga, service to the transcendental Supreme Lord Krsna, can give happiness – nothing else can do so. Bhakti-yoga is very easy. Simply chant: ‘Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.’

“If you are working, if you are walking, or if you are cooking – at any time you can chant. In daytime, night-time, or morning-time, even if you are sick or not pure, you can chant these holy names of Krsna.

“Srila Suta Gosvami is telling us that we should hear the glorification of the Supreme Lord Krsna, we should meditate on Him, and we should glorify His good qualities and activities. This is bhakti-yoga. In this way we can be happy – not by any other means.”

Throughout the week, Srila Maharaja, and under his direction his representative speakers, related many histories from the Bhagavatam. They spoke about the teachings of Sri Kapiladeva to His mother Devahuti, and about the history and character of Jada Bharata, King Citraketu, Ajamila, and Prahlada Maharaja. They also spoke about Sri Krsna’s sweet pastimes in Vrndavana. Srila Narayana Maharaja then briefly discussed the Lord’s pastimes in Mathura and Dvaraka, up to His concluding pastime of returning to His transcendental abode in Goloka Vrndavana.

The last evening of the festival was April 13th, and the divine appearance day of Lord Sri Krsna in the form of Lord Ramacandra was April 14th. Because most of the Chinese devotees would be leaving on the morning of the 14th, Srila Narayana Maharaja was kind enough to give a beautiful discourse on the heart-rending pastimes of Lord Sri Rama on that last evening.

On the pathway from the festival-site to Srila Maharaja’s house – a buffalo-conservation reserve.

Initiation was held on April 10th at Srila Maharaja’s residence, where over fifty devotees from mainland China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines received their second birth.

Devotees from Hong Kong receiving his new name – Johnson became Jayadeva dasa, Varva became Visakha dasi, Michael became Madhusudana dasa, and so on.

Srila Maharaja mercifully gave darsana every morning, at which time groups of devotees from different countries and cities would come to meet him and ask him questions. He said to a new devotee, “If you want to be happy in this world and the transcendental world, you must chant ‘Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.’ Otherwise in future births, you may become a donkey, a dog, a cat, a pig, or any other animal. Be happy forever. Do not fear – there is no need to fear.

“You see that there are hundreds of thousands of devotees in Canada, America, Europe, and here also. So many beautiful young girls and boys are taking initiation. So don’t fear; your life will be happy.

“Wearing the three strands of tulasi neck-beads is very powerful. You will have no problems with blood pressure if you wear this. By wearing tulasi, whatever you will tell will be true, and you will always be healthy and wealthy.”

Srila Narayan Maharaja left Hong Kong on April 16th, en route for Vancouver, Canada. About fifty devotees met him at the airport to see him off, and they were all happy to receive his invitation to come to India for this year’s one-month-long Vrndavana Kartika parikrama in October. We will send you that airport darsana soon.

I had very little hope to come back again

Saturday, December 16, 1967

San Francisco, Calif.

When I left your country on the 22nd of July, I had very little hope to  come back again. But Krishna informed me that I’m not going to die immediately; therefore, I have come back again to get inspiration of Krishna Consciousness from you all good souls. Although officially I am your Spiritual Master, I consider you all students as my Spiritual Master because your love for Krishna and service for Krishna teach me how to become a sincere Krishna Conscious person.

My Dear Madhusudana,

Please accept my blessings. I am so happy to read your letter dated Dec. 28, 1967. And I am very concerned that due to your sincerity and service mood you have improved in Krishna Consciousness excellently. Whatever allocation of duty there may be, if we try to execute such specific duty sincerely, that alone can make us much more advanced in Krishna Consciousness.

In the Bhagavad-gita, it is stated that for the fixed up devotee there is one duty. This duty is understood through the transparent medium via media of the Spiritual Master. It is better service to Krishna and Spiritual Master in a feeling of separation; sometimes there is risk in the matter of direct service.

For example, Kirtanananda was giving me direct service by massaging, cooking for me, and so many other things; but later on by dictation of Maya, he became puffed up, so much so that he thought his Spiritual Master a common man, and was existing only on account of his service.

This mentality at once pushed him down. Of course, those who are sincere devotee, they take direct service as an opportunity, but the illusory energy is so strong that it acts on this doctrine of familiarity breeds contempt. Kirtanananda was thinking I was existing on his service, instead of realizing I was giving him opportunity to do me some service.

"I am so glad to hear that you are now married"

I am so glad to hear that you are now married. I pray Krishna that you may live henceforward happily as a householder, without thinking of a separation from your wife. According to Vedic wisdom, a good wife is a great assistant for material and spiritual prosperity. Even if there is some deficiency, you should try to correct it without thinking in the Westernized way.

I hope your wife may be taking interest in your chanting Sankirtana and reading Srimad-Bhagavatam. As she has become your life’s companion, it is your duty to induce her, peacefully, in the matter of spiritual advancement of life.

Srila Prabhupada Quote Of The Day

JOURNAL: Thursday 3 February

N.Y.

Today there was a very nice demonstration of tape-record Samkirtan by me.
It is all Grace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Srila Haridas Thakur said that the transcendental sound of Hari Nama would even purify the heart of birds and beasts. Today this statement of Thakur Haridas is corroborated. These American can not understand even a word’s meaning of the Sankirtan and yet they were so much attracted? It is all Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s power; there is no credit for me.

Fight for the Sake of Fighting

Do thou fight for the sake of fighting, without considering happiness or distress, loss or gain, victory or defeat — and by so doing you shall never incur sin.

Gradual Development of Love

In the beginning there must be faith. Then one becomes interested in associating with pure devotees. Thereafter one is initiated by the spiritual master and executes the regulative principles under his orders. Thus one is freed from all unwanted habits and becomes firmly fixed in devotional service.

Thereafter, one develops taste and attachment. This is the way of sadhana-bhakti, the execution of devotional service according to the regulative principles. Gradually emotions intensify, and finally there is an awakening of love. This is the gradual development of love of Godhead for the devotee interested in Krishna Consciousness.
