"Technical analysis" is an industry term that sounds more complicated than it actually is. Essentially, traders use charted data to forecast future price movement by studying price movement patterns of the past.

It's kind of like driving forward by only looking at your car's rear-view mirror: you can use the lines on the road to make sure the car is driving straight forward, but when the lines start changing direction, you know you've hit a corner. Just like technical analysis, driving by only using a rear view mirror can be difficult – if not impossible – to spot upcoming sharp corners, especially when moving at fast speeds. That's why it's important to also consider fundamental factors like economic, social, and political events that might affect the market.

Before delving into technical indicators and strategies, it's important to have a general understanding of technical analysis basics.
